Technology, Intelligence and the Evolution of the Instrument

Every generation grows up surrounded by tools that quietly change the way we think. A simple example is the calculator.

Many people who grew up before calculators became commonplace developed extraordinary mental arithmetic skills. They could multiply large numbers, estimate results, and perform calculations almost instinctively because they practised these skills every day.

Later generations, including those who grew up with calculators, often developed a different relationship with mathematics. The ability to perform complex arithmetic quickly in the mind became less important because the tool could handle that process instantly.
